Highlights in the HCC Indonesian Department in 2010

In addition to participating in different classroom lessons and activities, the Year 9 students have enjoyed the opportunity to participate in Indonesian in a wide range of cultural excursions such as watching an Indonesian Movie called “Ruma Maida (“Maida’s House”) at Wesley Senior College Theatre; enjoying eating a delicious Indonesian lunch at the ‘Indonesian Restaurant’ as well as visiting the Indonesian Consulate to learn gamelan and Shadow Puppet.

INDONESIAN TRIP

On Saturday 26 June 2010, Year 9 and some of the Year 8 LOTE Indonesian students and school staff are heading to Indonesia for 18 days to participate in an Indonesian Course and Language Immersion Programme. We will be staying in Yogyakarta (Middle Java) for 14 days and Denpasar and Kuta, in Bali for 4 days and will return to Melbourne on Wednesday 14July 2010.

The purpose of this Indonesian Course and Language Immersion Programme is for the students to immerse themselves in the lifestyle and custom of the nation whose language they have been learning.  When in Yogyakarta, students will stay with a Christian family and in Hotels in Denpasar and Kuta, in Bali.

Some of the activities that the Indonesian students will be doing in Indonesia include: participating in a language course, a batik making course, a cooking course, a leather puppet course, some gamelan (instrument) practice, biking, involvement in traditional farming practice, playing kites, watching Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan Temple and visiting a Kotagede Silversmith, where the students will participate in a silver course and can also buy silver.  Some of the places that we will be visiting are:  Borobudur, Royal Palace, Parangtritis Beach, Imogiri Noble Cemetery, Waterbom Park, Elephant Park, and watching sunsets at the beach,  to name but a few.  Shopping and relaxing at the beach are also high on the agenda!

The LOTE Indonesian students have been working hard to prepare themselves for this immersion programme and are looking forward to the event.

The Indonesian Department wishes to express our thanks and gratitude to the College Board and our College community, especially to the parents who have supported the valuable activities that will benefit the students.
