        Welcome

2010 Science Competition Results

Over 28,000 students entered the competition, representing all Australian States and Territories in addition to significant numbers of entries from Singapore, the Philippines and New Zealand. Australian Science Innovations hopes that your students enjoyed the experience of testing their science skills in a competitive situation outside the normal school assessment framework.

In 2010 ASI, for the first time, contracted the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to develop the questions for the Competition papers. This enabled the strengths of our Competition to be retained: its emphasis on problem solving and processes of scientific enquiry, and its topicality and focus on contemporary issues, whilst also improving the reliability of the Competition through a rigorous pre-testing of questions and papers. The questions have been aligned to the draft Australian Curriculum-Science.

With the involvement of ACER, we have been able to produce a more sophisticated diagnostic report for teachers, to enable you to analyse students' achievements and progress from different perspectives, including how your students have performed in relation to the rest of the participants. Your school's results for the 2010 Rio Tinto Big Science Competition are now available for download below (Microsoft Excel documents).

What certificates do students receive?

Certificates are awarded in each state and territory as follows:

  • High Distinction (2%)
  • Distinction (15%)
  • Credit (50%)
  • Participation (remaining students).
