About Grade 3, 2010
Welcome to the Grade 3 web page! My Name is Haley Ratten and I am the proud teacher of 2010’s Grade 3
students.
It is my joy to join the Heatherton Christian College community this year as we prepare to create a time
of discovery, encouragement and an environment of support and love. I am looking forward to seeing each child grow
academically as well as socially, emotionally and in their knowledge and understanding of God. What a blessing it
is to have each other on this journey! It is my desire that every member of our class will not only love school,
but develop a life-long love for learning.

Miss Ratten and Caitlyn share a love for Anne of Green Gables!

Grade 3 – Bring your favourite book day!
Already this year is shaping up to be very exciting! The 19 students in our class have all returned from summer
holidays enthusiastic to begin another year.
This year we are looking forward to learning many new things including:
Reading– We are now starting to read chapter books! We have time each day to enjoy choosing and
reading new books. Each night at home we read for at least 15 minutes. However many of us loose track of time and
end up reading for much longer! Monthly book club sessions allow us to discuss the books we are reading in small
groups.
As a class we also enjoy sharing, discussing and responding to picture books.

Reading time!
Writing – We continue to learn the mechanics of writing. However, more importantly, we are
learning to play with language. This year we will study, and write many different styles and forms of writing. We
are continuing our creative story writing and practicing the process of planning, drafting, editing and
publishing.
Maths – We enjoy working with numbers and learning how different numbers relate and connect
with each other. We play lots of math games which teach us important ideas and concepts about mathematics.
Integrated topic – Throughout the year we will be studying different topics. These topics
include Erosion and Weathering, Energy and Power and Australian Environment. We will be conducting experiments,
engaging in research and participating in excursions to learn more about these topics, and how they relate to us
and the world we live in.
It is a joy and a privilege to work together as we set and achieve goals throughout the year. As a Grade
we decided that in our classroom we:
- Obey the teacher
- Respect our friends
- Encourage our friends
- Always do our best work, and
- Care for our classroom
Above all we seek to glorify God in all that we
do.
